EUROPEAN FOOTBALL: SEASON PREVIEWS - 2011 / 2012

With the big kick-offs fast approaching around Europe’s top domestic leagues, it’s time to cast our eyes over the contenders from each country.   In one of the most hotly anticipated seasons in years, fans will be licking their lips as they look to find value for money bets as the countdown begins.

England (EPL)

The English premier league, since its inception in 1992 has been dominated by one club in particular, Manchester Utd.  With 12 titles amassed under Sir Alex Ferguson, it’s hard to see past the Red Devils when it comes to the business end of a season, they’ve been there, seen it, done it, wrote the book and got the t-shirt.  Only a fool would back against them, or would they?
The ‘Big Four’ in the EPL are Manchester Utd, Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea.   Each team has its merits, but only two out of that 4 seem genuinely capable of a title challenge. Fergie’s men will have one eye on the Champions League trophy again as they also mount a domestic assault on a 13th Premiership title.  Make no mistake, Manchester Utd are the team to beat, but don’t lay your cash down just yet.
Although we mentioned Liverpool earlier on, they haven’t won a premier league title since the 89/90 season, but they have dominated the top 4 in the EPL when it comes to qualifying for a Champions League spot. With Kenny Dalglish splashing the cash during the close-season, and strengthening what was a weary looking side, expect a much more capable Liverpool team this season.
Arsenal of late have been the bridesmaids, so near yet so far, playing attractive football but with no substance under Arsene Wenger.  It would we have to say, be foolish to write them off altogether though, as they have lifted the premier league title in 2001/02 and 2002/04.  With few signings at the Emirates as we went to press, it’s going to be nip and tuck this season for the gunners, but certainly a bet for the more ‘adventurous’ out there.
Chelsea, under new wonderkid, (sorry, coach) Andre Villas-Boas, perhaps are the most realistic title contenders outside of Man u.  The ex Porto coach takes over the reigns from Carlo Ancelotti in his debut season in the EPL.  With many egos’ to manage in a millionaire Chelsea squad, Villas-Boas will have to stamp his authority early on this team. At only 33 years old he is one of the youngest managers in European football, but his record as a coach is outstanding, with his Porto team winning the domestic title unbeaten and also scooping the Europa League in the same season.  Our tip for this season is Chelsea to win the EPL.
Finally, let’s not forget the new kid in town, Manchester City, bankrolled by the billions of Sheikh Mansour. With a limitless transfer budget, Roberto Mancini will have no excuses should his side be incapable of challenging for the title.  A baron season for City would end in the likeable Italian being sacked possibly long before the season finishes.  So when you think about it like that, perhaps they are the dark horse for the title, and the proper value bet.
In contention for Europa League places, Everton, Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur will be there or there abouts and all represent value in terms of placings within the league.

Scotland (SPL)

In what is regarded as a traditional 2 horse race between Celtic and Rangers, there will be 2 teams trying to split the Old Firm monopoly and gatecrash the title party.
Step forward, Hearts and Dundee Utd.  With no real value to be found in betting your money on either Glasgow side, the smart money is on laying some of your hard earned cash on either Hearts or Dundee Utd finishing 2nd.    If you really fancy a challenge, why not bet ‘without the old firm’ and see the value to be had.  There seriously good odds everywhere, you’ve just got to do your homework.  But save yourself the hassle and read this blog.
Take Rangers and Ally McCoist for example, a young inexperienced manger, still wet behind the ears, new finance injected into the transfer-war chest and a period of transition as players come and go at the club.  Not ideal in terms of a winning formula.  However, across the city his opponent finds himself in a situation not alien to McCoist’s.   Celtic boss Neil Lennon has been in charge for 1 season and delivered the Scottish Cup but missed out on the league title in the final round last season’s campaign.  This year is all about making amends for Celtic, and Lennon will be eager for his players to banish the hurt of last season.  If you want to lay a big bet, then perhaps the smart money is on Celtic as they have a point to prove.
So what about the relegation candidates?  With rookies Dunfermline just being promoted and little investment made in terms of new signings, then the value for money bet is the Pars to be relegated.
If you really want to get into the nitty gritty of Scottish football, here are our tips for promotion from the lower leagues.   In the third division, Alloa, under Paul Hartley seem galvanised, take them to go back up at the first time of asking.   Second division, Stirling Albion will be back at a level they can cope with, and represent great value under the stewardship of Jockey Scott, take the Bino’s to make it back at the first time of asking.  Finally, in the first division, despite being docked 25 points last season, Dundee had an outstanding season and would have been promoted were it not for the deduction of points.  Take Barry Smith’s men to make the leap back into the big-time this season, this really does resemble a great value single bet, or a nice treble if you include the second and third division winners.

Spain – Primera Liga

The silly season has begun in Spain already.  With the big two (Barcelona and Real Madrid) flexing their financial muscles, the destination of the Primera Liga crown this season is almost to close to call.  Barca have sold Bojan to Roma and brought in Alexis Sanches from Udinese, while they continue to cast a wishful eye at Arsenal in the hope of persuading Cesc Fabregas to sign. As this is probably Pep Guardiola’s last season in charge of the Catalan club, it can work two ways.  Perhaps the players will have one eye on the who the new manager is coming in and take their eye off the ball, or on the other hand perhaps they’ll want to give Pep one final send-off, the later being the most probable.
Real Madrid continue to court the Brazilian forward Neymar and Togolese striker Adebayor, and as this goes to press, we’d expect a bid to be tabled for one of the pair.  However, Jose Mourinho knows there will be no excuses given to him this year as he attempts to challenge Barcelona.  The Portuguese coach and self titled ‘Special One’ realises at the very least he must deliver the Primera Liga title to keep his job.  With Real Madrid having failed to reach the Champions League final since 2002 despite astronomic spending on the team, Mourinho knows he must do everything possible to change that statistic.  Judging by last season’s spectacular ‘El-Grand Classico’ semi-final match-up against Barca, Mourinho’s team are still not good enough.
Meanwhile, a cat amongst the pigeons this year is Malaga FC.  After the club was purchased by Qatari billionaire Sheikh Abdullah in June 2010, the name of the game for the ‘Anchovies’ is challenging for a Champions League spot.  With Manuel Pellegrini at the helm, promised big name signings funded by Qatari oil cash, you can expect Malaga to be putting a few clubs noses out of joint as they attempt to gatecrash the Champions League party.
As well as the usual order of the big two at the top of the table, it’s worth bearing in mind that there are other champions league spot challengers.  Valencia, Seville, the aforementioned Malaga and finally Villarreal.  Between those teams, it’s safe to say they will carve up the The Champions League and Europa League spots, while not forgetting Athletico Bilbao and Athletico Madrid.  Again, these could prove excellent value for money.
Remember, if you’re looking for value, there are usually plenty of upsets as well in the Spanish Cup, otherwise known as the Copa Del Rey.  Spanish teams generally have an excellent record in the Europa League as well,  and if you fancy a nibble each-way, keep an eye on Athletico Bilbao and Athletico Madrid this year in UEFA’s second flagship competition.
Without doubt this will prove to be a historic and perhaps watershed season in the Primera Liga.  Pep Guardiola will quit Barca in 2012, and he may be followed out the door by Real Madrid’s Mourinho if he can’t topple what is arguably the greatest club side ever to have played the game, Barcelona.

Germany – Bundesliga

In what is arguably the most competitive league in Europe, the Bundesliga comes roaring back to life in August.
In the last 5 seasons, VFB Stuttgart, VFL Wolfsburg, Bayern Munich (twice) and Borussia Dortmund have all won the Bundesliga crown.
With current champions Dortmund revitalised under young coach Jurgen Klopp, they haven’t rested on their laurels as the team from the Ruhr have signed Croatian attacking midfielder Ivan Perisic from Club Brugge for a fee of 5.5 million Euros.  With 22 goals in his first full Belgian season, the ‘Dortmunder’ might just have signed the bargain of the season.  With the young champions keeping the nucleus of their squad together as well as the coaching staff, there is every possibility of back to back title successes.
So what about the best of the rest?  Well, Bayer Leverkusen finished 2nd last season and will be aiming to make up for the misery of losing out so near the end.  Their cause is not helped by the loss of Chilean defensive midfielder Arturo Vidal for 10.5 million Euros to Juventus of Italy.  At the time of this article going to press, Leverkusen had made no effort to splash the cash on his replacement.  So on that basis, it’s hard to back Leverkusen to repeat the heights they reached last season, but football is a cruel mistress and chews up and spits out those who look into the future too much.  They are definitely ‘one to watch’ should they spend some of their transfer kitty.
You're probably wondering why we’ve not mentioned Bayern Munich yet?  Well, let’s look over their chances.   After finishing in 3rd last season, the Bavarian team disposed of their formidable Dutch coach Louis Van Gaal in March 2011 and announced their former coach Jupp Heynckes would be taking over.  Finishing second is not an option if you are Bayern Munich coach and Heynckes knows only too well how unforgiving the Bayern Munich fans and board can be.  However, he should maybe be used to it, having won the Champions League in 1998 with Real Madrid, he was fired for not winning the Primera Liga in the same season!   The jury is out on what Heynckes can do to a squad low on confidence, however this author firmly believes that Bayern Munich will be German Champions for the 2011/12 season especially if they hold on to top scorer, Mario Gomez.
Then there is the spectacle of who else could maybe challenge for the Bundesliga title, the heavily financed VFL Wolfsburg, and Hamburg should be more than capable of mounting a challenge, but the difficult question is can they sustain it?.  We must be realistic and the gambling man would have his cold hard cash on Wolfsburg and Hamburg qualifying for a Europa League Place next season.
With Hannover96 and Mainz 05 already assured of European football this term in the Europa League, they are most definitely worth each way money to cause upsets in the European arena.  Any teams that finish 4th and 5th in the Bundesliga need to be shown utmost respect in the Europa League.
So to summarise.  A resurgent Bayern Munich will prevail over a youthful Dortmund side for the title.   In terms of who might snatch the Champions league positions, it's hard to look past Dortmund and Leverkusen again due to their experience and will to win.
